In addition to the rich cultural heritage and promising future catalogued at San Juan's many museums, visitors can get a little closer to that heritage by visiting the living monuments throughout the city.
The "must-see" list includes:
Old San Juan & City Walls
Some of the walls date to defensive fortifications in the 17th century. San Juan Gate, next to the governors'
palace at La Fortaleza, was for a long time the main entrance to Old San Juan. A UNESCO World Heritage site,
the area includes many restored historical buildings, open-air cafes, restaurants, bars and shops.
El Morro
Puerto Rico's best known fortress, declared a World Heritage elite by the United Nations in 1933, El
Morro was fortified by Spanish troops to keep sea-borne enemies out of Old San Juan. This iconic
monument is a must-see for any tour.
Shopping
Like many places in the Caribbean, visitors will find plenty of local arts and crafts. They'll also find plenty
of designer boutiques along Condado's Avenida Ashford and the largest shopping mall on the island at Plaza Las
Americas.
Bacardi Rum Distillery
Tours are available of the home distillery of this noted Puerto Rican rum.
El Cañuelo
Small fort, originally called San Juan de la Cruz, burned during the 1625 Dutch attack and was rebuilt in
stone by the Spaniards in the 1670's.
El Capitolio
Italian Classical Renaissance style building which has been home to the Puerto Rico Legislature since it was
inaugurated on February 11, 1929.
Fuerte San Cristóbal
Largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World; designated a World Heritage site in 1983.
La Fortaleza
The first fortification built in 1533 to defend San Juan served as the home for 16th and 17th century colonial
governors and is currently the official residence and administrative headquarters of the governor.
